Thorvald (Ted) Kofoed was born on August 18, 1907 in Allinge, Bornholm, Denmark to Hans Julius Kofoed and Juliane Elise Hansen. Ted had three older siblings, and his father died when Ted was only two years old. The family had a small farm, but it was not enough to support the family, and Ted's mother had to start working outside of the house.
